Basil W. Gwinn of Hamby, Texas passed away Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the age of 84. Funeral services will be held in Elmdale Baptist Church on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 9:30 A.M. with Pastor DeWayne Bush officiating. Interment will follow in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, under the direction of North’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. in North’s Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St.
Basil was born July 11, 1932 in Harrold, Texas to Raymond and Opal (Bottoms) Gwinn. He married the love of his life, Wanda Jean Gollihar on February 10, 1955. Basil served our country during the Korean War. He was a part of the Army’s 17th Field Artillery BN “The Persuaders”. He was also the owner of Abtex Import Auto Salvage in Abilene, where he worked along with this son Jody Gwinn for over thirty years. He loved his family above all else and enjoyed getting to spend time with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Opal Gwinn, brothers: Bobby Gwinn, Jack Gwinn, Lewis Gwinn and Jerul Gwinn. Sisters: Francis Caudle and Geneva Lantrip.
Basil is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Jean Gwinn and his five children. Joy Gwinn Grun and husband Herbert of Albany, Texas, Jody Gwinn of Coleman, Texas, Kym Gwinn of Lubbock, Texas, Jennifer Gwinn Dudu and husband Samuel of Allen, Texas and Heather Gwinn Upchurch and husband Matt of Little Elm, Texas. He is survived by one brother, Glen Gwinn of Merkel, Texas. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Preston Grun, J.P. Hensley, Jeremy Gwinn, Bryan English, Ke’Shaun Key, and Je’von Key. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Jason Gwinn.
