Condolence: Mr. Taylor was an excellent geology teacher and a fine human being. He had a way of making geology “real,” even for those of us non-majors of us who took it for fun, and certain aspects of his course have remained with me by way of avocation all my life. I have special reason to remember him from McMurry in the mid-1960s; on the way to his geology final exam, as a result of caffeine poisoning from too many coffee-driven late night hours of after-school job and study, I fainted on the stairs of “Old Main” building. He happened to be right behind me, and caught me as I tumbled, picked me up, and carried all 116 pounds of me up the stairs to the geology room, where he swept his carefully laid-out specimens off the sample table and deposited me there. I couldn’t have been more embarrassed, and apologized over and over; his reply was something to the effect of, “Think nothing of it, I have a daughter.” When I recovered days later, I found that he had rescheduled the exam for my lab partner and me to a Saturday morning, which he was under no obligation to do. He also could have graded us down for taking the test late, but he didn’t. ( I think he understood that maintaining a four-point grade average was important to me, as I felt I had to do my best in gratitude for the full scholarship McMurry had granted me--without which I would have had scant opportunity for college at all; my lab partner had a similar situation.) I’m betting he led his entire life in this fashion, and has “graduated” to a well-deserved reward.
