Joe B. Owen 83, of Abilene, passed away June 13, 2018. A Graveside service will be held on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Donita Lea officiating, under the direction of North’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 17, 2018, from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M in North’s Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St.
Mr. Owen was born May 8, 1935 in Mayfield, Kentucky to Leslie and Ophelia (Bridges) Owen. He lived in Sedalia, Kentucky during his youth and early adult years. He proudly served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1957. Prior to moving to Texas, he studied and trained in Consumer Finance and worked as a loan manager in Kentucky and Missouri. Later he became interested in oil and gas exploration and after several years of training, Joe started Cottonwood Petroleum Company and was active in drilling and operating oil wells in the Abilene area for over thirty years, until he sold the company in 2009. He also served as a part-time U.S. Deputy Marshal in Abilene. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. Joe was also a member of the Abilene Masonic Lodge and Shrine Temple in San Angelo and was a past member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. He was a member of the Safari Club International. His hobbies were international big game hunting, sail fishing and international travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Daina Jurika-Owen of Abilene; son, Karl A. Owen and wife Cynthia; daughter, Debbie Hurt and husband Weldon; step-son, Kristaps Zarins and wife Zina, all of Abilene; step-daughter, Anete Cookson and husband Brian of Dunstable, Massachusetts, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
